Overview

The HERO School Visit Program continues to be a huge hit with metro Atlanta schools. Last year, the HEROs visited over 103 schools and organizations and reached over 56,000 students. In the last five years, the HEROs have made over 500 visits and reached over 175,000 students!

HERO OPERATORS ARE ONLY AVAILABLE FOR SCHOOL VISITS TUESDAYS - THURSDAYS.

HEROs (Highway Emergency Response Operators) are most often requested for Career Day events. Students of all grade levels crowd around the bright yellow trucks, where they look at the flashing lights and tools of the trade, listen to stories of highway heroics, and learn about driver safety and emergency preparedness.

How to Request a Visit

In order to better accommodate the growing number of school requests, ensure proper staffing during peak traffic hours, and save time and fuel, the process of scheduling HERO visits is as follows:

  1. Download and fill out a HERO School Visit Request Form (.pdf, 291K). Once downloaded, complete the form by selecting each gray box and filling in the required information. Save the completed form.
Note: You must use Adobe Reader to fill out the form.
  2. Save, attach, and e-mail the completed form to ebolden@dot.ga.gov. No faxes or phone calls can be accepted. Please note that any incomplete forms will be returned for additional information.
  3. Please schedule school visits 30 days in advance.
  4. Provide two alternate dates for your school's visit. We can schedule only two HERO visits per day. A different time slot on the same day requested does not count as an alternate date.
  5. Please allow two weeks for confirmation via e-mail. Please send an email to ebolden@dot.ga.gov if you have not received your confirmation within the two-week timeframe.

Once we receive the completed request form, we will make every attempt to schedule your HERO visit on the preferred date. Please note that all HERO visits are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. We recommend you submit your request as soon as possible to ensure your first choice. The representative listed on the form will be notified via e-mail when your HERO visit is confirmed.

Please note:

  • HEROs are currently available to visit schools in these counties: Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Douglas, DeKalb, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry and Rockdale. We hope to add more counties in the future.
  • If you need to change the date of your scheduled HERO visit, please notify us via e-mail at least three weeks in advance. Every effort will be made to accommodate your request.
  • In the event of severe weather or significant traffic-related events, we might need to reschedule your school's HERO visit without significant notice. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience.

FAQ

How long is a HERO presentation and how many students can be accommodated?
A standard demonstration is about 15-20 minutes. Many coordinators rotate small groups of no more than 30 students at a time every 15-20 minutes. This way every student has an opportunity to see the truck and hear the HERO's presentation.

What do the HEROs talk about?
Depending on age group, HEROs may cover topics such as incident management, driver safety, and emergency readiness, or do a show-and-tell of the various tools and equipment they use.

How long can the HEROs stay for a visit?
Most HERO visits are scheduled for weekdays between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Due to shift change, the HERO must leave the school by 12:30 p.m. and return to headquarters. HEROs are unavailable to visit schools between the hours of 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Is an outdoor staging area required?
No, but since the truck is the centerpiece of the demonstration, coordinators are advised to use a covered area such as a bus depot.

What if bad weather prevents an outdoor demonstration?
If rain or other weather prevents an outdoor setting, the HERO can visit individual classrooms or speak to a large group in an assembly setting; however, students will miss the opportunity to see the truck. Coordinators are advised to use discretion if bad weather moves in on the morning or week of the visit, and make arrangements to reschedule if possible. In cases of severe weather or major traffic incidents, we may need to reschedule your visit without significant notice. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience.
